Department of Marine Biology

The department aims to develop and protect the important natural resources in the Iraqi regional waters and Shatt al-Arab, which include biodiversity and their optimal utilization, as well as diagnosing environmental and economic problems related to biological sciences. The department investigates plant and animal life in the northwest of the Arabian Gulf and the southern portion of Iraq. Additionally, it emphasizes the investigation of primary productivity, distribution, classification of plant and animal life, the biodiversity and distribution of the majority of zooplankton communities in southern Iraq and the Gulf region.
